From Loss to Purpose: Lisa’s Journey Into Pet Nutrition

Published on: 13th March, 2026

In this heartfelt episode of Animal Posse, Dixie sits down with Lisa, owner of Pet Wants Metairie, to explore how unimaginable loss transformed into a mission to help pets live healthier, longer lives. After losing her beloved soul dog, Darby, to an aggressive cancer, Lisa began searching for answers. That search led her deep into the world of pet nutrition and ultimately inspired her to open her own Pet Wants franchise.

Welcome to Animal Posse, the podcast dedicated to the

2

:

people and rescues making a

difference in the lives of animals.

3

:

Today I am talking with Lisa of Pet

Wants Metairie . Before we get started,

4

:

I want to share a quick reminder.,

5

:

Lisa, is speaking from her

personal journey with her own pets.

6

:

She's not a veterinarian and

nothing here should replace

7

:

professional veterinary care.

8

:

If something ever feels off with your

pet, your vet is always the first stop.

9

:

Welcome to the show, Lisa.

10

:

Thank you for coming on to

talk about pet nutrition.

11

:

Lisa: Thank you for having me.

12

:

Dixie: Tell us what was going on

with your pet's health that made you

13

:

feel that something wasn't adding

up and that caused you to go more

14

:

into investigating pet nutrition?

15

:

Lisa: My dog had a mass

removed in December of:

16

:

And come to find out they did blood

work, of course, before the surgery.

17

:

They didn't tell me they had

she had abnormal blood work.

18

:

And by February 5th of the following

year,:

19

:

And I'm like, how come you guys

didn't tell me this in November?

20

:

It aggressively attacked her body.

21

:

I found that out from holistic type vet.

22

:

Her name is Dr.

23

:

Adria Sagera, and she told me she,

she looked all the blood work.

24

:

She spent an hour with my dog,

and my dog is my soulmate.

25

:

Let tell you, it took

everything inside of me.

26

:

Not to, lose my, mind.

27

:

Every time I think about this,

I still cry about my dog because

28

:

she was like the coolest dog ever.

29

:

She was like a human, and

she was my best friend.

30

:

And so when I come to find out that

part of the reason that she got sick

31

:

is because of the food I was feeding

her, I didn't know any better.

32

:

And I'm still kinda just guilt

around with me, and it hurts.

33

:

It hurts.

34

:

So when she passed away

that fall in April.

35

:

And I was determined to find out

what I did wrong and swear that I

36

:

never did it to another dog again.

37

:

So I turned around and started

to learn about pet nutrition and,

38

:

part of it was was through doing

the franchising with Pet Wants

39

:

Pet Wants is a company that is very

strict about nutrition and freshness

40

:

of the food, and I like that.

41

:

So I was laid off from my job last year

and he gave me a severance package.

42

:

The severance package.

43

:

Allowed me to buy into the

franchise and I'm so glad I did.

44

:

I see a lot of promise in the future.

45

:

I've only been in business for two months,

but I've already helped a few dogs and

46

:

it makes me feel really good inside.

47

:

So I finally met the dog the

other day and I was crying.

48

:

I was just like, oh my

God, I love this dog.

49

:

I'm not a vet, I don't know , everything

but I do have a team behind me.

50

:

And if I don't know a nutrition

question, I can ask them and find out

51

:

the answer to the nutrition question.

52

:

A lot of it has has to do with pet

nutrition when we feed our dogs,

53

:

even the treats matters, everything.

54

:

And so that's what got me into this

business and I'm doing it all in the

55

:

memory of my dog, Darby and Michelle,

because she was my angel and I know she's

56

:

probably proud of me for doing this.

57

:

She was only eight and a half

years old when she passed away and

58

:

that just another thing to hurt.

59

:

She was too young to die.

60

:

And , I don't wanna see more

dogs go through that, or

61

:

more owners go through that.

62

:

If there's something I can do to help,

I wanna help, and so that's why I

63

:

got into this, and I'm so glad I did.

64

:

I'm so glad I did, I'm only been in

business two and a half months, but we're

65

:

growing, and , I'm gonna work hard to

make it grow into a successful business.

66

:

I'm gonna work hard to do whatever

I can, and right now we're just

67

:

a e-commerce type business.

68

:

Ill do mobile deliveries but I am

currently looking for storefront.

69

:

I'm hoping to get on Metiaire Road or

Airline Highway around that area to

70

:

find a store, a storefront, and make it

better and make bigger and better, and.

71

:

As many dogs as I possibly can.

72

:

That's what this is all about.

73

:

Dixie: Yeah, I can understand that too,

because I actually lost my cat to cancer.

74

:

It was very sudden.

75

:

The vet believes that mine had a

heart tumor and , it was crazy because

76

:

he's what I considered my soul cat.

77

:

So I know what you say.

78

:

Yeah.

79

:

When you say you have a soul

dog, this was my soul cat.

80

:

Yeah.

81

:

It was just crazy because he was

actually so healthy up until the time.

82

:

Yeah.

83

:

I noticed he was breathing funny.

84

:

And that's what kind of set me off.

85

:

And I noticed it started

with him breathing funny.

86

:

Even when we first took him in

and got his blood work done.

87

:

His blood work came back perfect.

88

:

And it, so it just, it happened so

89

:

Lisa: quick.

90

:

Dixie: Yeah.

91

:

It does, it happened so quick.

92

:

Yeah.,

93

:

For us, it was two and a half weeks.

94

:

When he first got sick, and I'm saying

when he first got sick, because really,

95

:

at the time he had no problems except he

was having a little bit of , a strange

96

:

way of breathing, is how I'm gonna put it.

97

:

I noticed it in his stomach.

98

:

He was doing a belly breathing.

99

:

So I , got him to my vet.

100

:

My vet said, let's get

some blood work done.

101

:

And when we went and we got the blood

work done, and I hate to say this,

102

:

but I was hoping it was pneumonia

or something like that, yeah.

103

:

And when we got the blood work done, his

blood work didn't really show anything,

104

:

but then we got the x-rays and we saw

the, that he had a pleural effusion, so

105

:

they had to drain the fluid off of his

lungs or was actually not on his lungs.

106

:

It was like around his heart.

107

:

And

108

:

oh, I'm so sorry.

109

:

Yeah.

110

:

And we had to take that fluid, we had

to send that fluid off to see what the

111

:

results would come back, and unfortunately

when we did get the results back, Aw.

112

:

He so sorry was, it was so fast

that he was so bad by the time

113

:

we got those results back anyway.

114

:

There wasn't much that

we could do, and yeah.

115

:

And it was just, and you know what?

116

:

Your

117

:

Lisa: pets will suffer.

118

:

Dixie: Yeah.

119

:

Going through all,

120

:

you

121

:

Lisa: don't want that to happen,

122

:

Dixie: It is funny because

it was like, he was fine.

123

:

I noticed the breathing, we got

the fluid removed, we got the

124

:

x-rays, all that kind of stuff.

125

:

And it was just crazy.

126

:

, It really was the progression of

it from going from a completely

127

:

healthy animal and it, right?

128

:

Yes.

129

:

Yeah.

130

:

Lisa: And you know what, once

you hit stage four, stage

131

:

five it's not even worth it.

132

:

There's really nothing you can do.

133

:

You can make the dog suffer,

or the cat suffer and it's

134

:

gonna cost you a lot of money.

135

:

And it's to a point where it's too late.

136

:

It's a losing battle, when

you get to that point.

137

:

So I'm just urging people, I'm

trying to spread the word, trying

138

:

to, get the word out there.

139

:

Just please feed your

animals because it matters.

140

:

It really does.

141

:

It would make such a

difference in the world.

142

:

We gotta understand that

we are their whole life.

143

:

We are their whole life, right?

144

:

We are there for them from the day

they born to the day they pass away.

145

:

They're only here for part of our lives

and we gotta make the best of that.

146

:

And I want my dogs to be

here as long as they can.

147

:

I have two other dogs now and I'm feeding

them pet wants food and pet wants treats

148

:

And that's all I feed 'em.

149

:

And let me tell you, it made

a difference in their coat.

150

:

It made a difference in their shedding.

151

:

They don't shed as much.

152

:

'cause one of 'em, the husky,

and believe me, the hair shedding

153

:

just went to a minimal amount,

of course they said a little bit.

154

:

He's double coated, but yeah,

pet wants just taught me so much

155

:

and I really appreciated that.

156

:

And I hope to spread the word

and the store, I'm gonna have

157

:

grooming and all this stuff.

158

:

I wanna keep on spreading the word.

159

:

So that's the thing I wanted to

share too, because like Darby, after

160

:

she had that mass removed from her.

161

:

I still didn't know my dog had cancer yet.

162

:

I didn't know until three months later.

163

:

By that time, it was way too late.

164

:

It was way too late.

165

:

It just broke my heart.

166

:

Dixie: Yeah.

167

:

And I know with like cats,

they hide their illnesses so

168

:

well, and I'm sure dogs do too.

169

:

Yes.

170

:

And it's shocking.

171

:

I'm still in shock over it now I

will say my vet, did everything

172

:

she could and I do appreciate that.

173

:

But it's just such a shock when

that happens to you that fast.

174

:

, It's just so unexpected,

175

:

Lisa: and yeah, and just, it to

me, by surprise, I wasn't expecting

176

:

that she was only eight and a half.

177

:

She, one of the signs that you could look

for is behavior changes, like not eating

178

:

becoming like lethargic . That's some of

the things that people could look for.

179

:

That's a warning sign.

180

:

Please, by all means,

get your dogs to the vet.

181

:

And if you're going to put

'em through the chemo fine.

182

:

But once they get to stage four or

stage five, it's probably not worth it.

183

:

It's probably not you don't want

your dogs suffer going through all

184

:

that stuff, and the hardest thing

to do was to let my soul dog go and

185

:

I was there with it till the end.

186

:

I went there when they actually did it.

187

:

And believe me, it crush me,

Dixie, it crushed me bad, but.

188

:

I knew that it was time.

189

:

She let me know that it was

time and I knew, and all I could

190

:

do is tell her to hold her and

say, Darby, this isn't goodbye.

191

:

This is just see you later.

192

:

I'm gonna see you again.

193

:

Just stuff like that.

194

:

But that dog was my absolute soul dog

and for to happen to her, I've had a

195

:

bunch of other dogs pass away and I

had through throughout my childhood all

196

:

the way up to, I'm 60 years old now,

so I've had dogs all my life, but that

197

:

dog, I cannot explain the connection.

198

:

It was something with me and that dog.

199

:

We had a special bond and to lose her.

200

:

Just broke my soul, and I know

there's a lot of people out

201

:

there that have soul dogs too.

202

:

And soul cats, okay?

203

:

And I just wanna do whatever I can to

try and help and let them live a little

204

:

longer, healthier, happier lives.

205

:

That's what this is all about.

206

:

That's why I'm doing this.

207

:

It makes me feel good knowing

that I'm doing something positive

208

:

to try and help people out.

209

:

, , Especially when it's a beautiful

day outside and we're gonna make

210

:

deliveries of people's homes.

211

:

I'm having a good time.

212

:

I turn my radio on.

213

:

I'm dancing in a my truck,

driving to people's homes

214

:

and that's a good time to me.

215

:

It makes me feel good knowing

that I'm doing something positive

216

:

to try and help people out.

217

:

And I tell 'em all the time.

218

:

You got any questions, anything

going on with your dog or

219

:

your cat, please let me know.

220

:

If I don't know the answer,

I will get the answer.

221

:

We will find out, . You know what I mean?

222

:

So many people just don't even

know if they lick at their paws, if

223

:

they're, scratching on the ground.

224

:

If they have rashes on their

belly, we need to pay attention

225

:

to those warning signs,

226

:

Dixie: You said that you took

your dog to a holistic vet.

227

:

Lisa: Yes.

228

:

Yes.

229

:

So

230

:

Dixie: What did she do that.

231

:

Opened your eyes to all of this?

232

:

Lisa: She's actually the

one that discovered it.

233

:

I brought all my records to her.

234

:

Okay.

235

:

'cause I was just set up with, I

don't wanna mention the vet's name,

236

:

but I was set up with that vet.

237

:

Okay.

238

:

Didn't even bother to tell me that my

dog had cancer until it was too late.

239

:

How do you go from December,

you saw in February?

240

:

She, February 5th.

241

:

She stage five.

242

:

It didn't understand that, so I

was a little aggravated, so I got

243

:

all my vet, my records for her.

244

:

Went to Dr.

245

:

Sagrera and I couldn't get Darby to

eat, so we put her on raw frozen food.

246

:

And let me tell you, that's the

only way I can get Darby to eat.

247

:

Dr.

248

:

Sagrera spent about an hour with

my dog, which I found phenomenal.

249

:

I thought it was like way cool.

250

:

What vet's gonna do that, right?

251

:

She's reading all her records.

252

:

She spent the time

where she's petting her.

253

:

She's loving on her.

254

:

She's honey, I wish somebody

got my hands on it sooner, and

255

:

all you could do is just cry.

256

:

There's no FDA regulations

on dog food out there.

257

:

There really aren't.

258

:

But everything we sell at.

259

:

pet wants is AAAFCO approved.

260

:

AAAFCO was like the fda for

dog and cat food production.

261

:

But they don't have power like FDA.

262

:

They can't just come in there

and shut you down because you

263

:

have byproducts in your food.

264

:

PET WANTS doesn't put it in byproducts.

265

:

No gluten, no soy, no wheat, no sugars.

266

:

None of that stuff is in our foods.

267

:

And let tell you, it's got

a good wholesome flavor.

268

:

So somebody didn't believe me

a couple weeks ago at an event.

269

:

And they didn't believe

it was natural stuff..

270

:

I was giving someone on his treats

to the dog dogs that came to my tent.

271

:

I said, you don't believe it's natural.

272

:

I put it in my mouth and ate it.

273

:

It's natural stuff.

274

:

It's not gonna hurt you or your

dog, which I'm not gonna go

275

:

around and eat dog biscuits.

276

:

But I just wanted to prove point

because, if it wasn't natural for

277

:

my dog I wouldn't give it to my dog

or I could give it to myself, is

278

:

the point he was trying to make.

279

:

So Dr.

280

:

Sagrera really was.

281

:

The eye opening person for me because

she really made me understand what I was

282

:

doing and I didn't realize is that it was,

partially my fault and it broke my heart.

283

:

I still carried this guilt around and

I know it really wasn't my fault 'cause

284

:

I was naive and didn't know any better.

285

:

But it still hurts.

286

:

It still hurts, and I wish I could

have done something to save my baby.

287

:

I just couldn't.

288

:

I know that I don't wanna do

this with the dogs I have now.

289

:

I want them to be happy and I want

them to be, living a normal life.

290

:

And I want 'em to live a long life

and spend more time with me, 'cause

291

:

hey, ain't like coming home from a

hard day at work or whatever, and come

292

:

home, snuggle up with a big old dog.

293

:

I got two big dogs.

294

:

I love my big dogs.

295

:

I'm not gonna lie.

296

:

Something about coming

home with that big dog.

297

:

At the end of the day.

298

:

I just, like it.

299

:

They are my babies though.

300

:

And so I'm gonna do what I

gotta do to take care of 'em.

301

:

And I know a lot of people like me

who feel the same way about their

302

:

cats or the dogs, what have you.

303

:

. I'm here to try and help as many

dogs as I can, and for being open two

304

:

months I've helped three dogs already.

305

:

It makes me warm in my heart.

306

:

It makes me feel so good to do that,

and that's why I got into this business,

307

:

Dixie: how is it that you

came to find pet wants?

308

:

Was this a recommendation by your vet

309

:

. ? Lisa: No, , she didn't recommend it to me.

310

:

I hadn't seen her in quite a while

actually, but I need to go see her.

311

:

I wanna get blood work constantly on

my dogs, like at least once a year

312

:

just to make sure everything's okay.

313

:

But I found out about it.

314

:

Actually thru another friend of mine.

315

:

I was looking for a franchisees because

I wanted to work for myself and.

316

:

Honestly, I was thinking of a UPS

store or something like that, but

317

:

there's, so many of 'em, so I'm like,

Lisa, why don't you do your passion?

318

:

I have two passions, my music and my pets.

319

:

Okay, i'm not gonna make money in music.

320

:

So I said let's look

for something pet wise.

321

:

So all of a sudden I found PET wants on,

and I heard about it through a friend and

322

:

I looked it up and it looked promising.

323

:

And I liked the fact

that everything is fresh.

324

:

They never mass produced anything.

325

:

It's not even made until I'll order it.

326

:

Okay.

327

:

Which is amazing to me.

328

:

It's not sitting in

distribution center for a year.

329

:

Lose nutrition the whole time.

330

:

They have shelf lights on everything.

331

:

You can't just let 'em sit

in a distribution center.

332

:

For a year two and expect 'em

to still be good and nutritious.

333

:

So we take pride in delivering

fresh food to our customers.

334

:

It's fresh.

335

:

It's not maybe a couple weeks old

when it gets to, to your dog's bowl.

336

:

That's, to me, that's a beautiful thing.

337

:

That's the way it should be, and they

cook everything slow and low like a roast.

338

:

So you jam packing those

nutrients in there.

339

:

There's no byproducts, , no soy, no wheat,

no gluten, none of that stuff is in there.

340

:

That's harmful to a dog.

341

:

And so that's what they take pride in

and that's what I'm taking pride in,

342

:

so I went to my warehouse early today.

343

:

I got a delivery coming tomorrow for

some food that, that I order a lot.

344

:

Two weeks ago, something like that.

345

:

Like I said, they don't make it

until I order it and they're coming

346

:

tomorrow and bring, so I went to the my

warehouse to rotate my product, and I

347

:

put little stickers on it when it gets

here, because I do not want to give

348

:

anybody anything old , when I'm selling

you food, it's gonna be fresh food.

349

:

When I bring it to you, it's

gonna be fresh, if I could

350

:

bring it to you, now i would.

351

:

But so that's with the kibble and we

have freeze dried product as well.

352

:

Freeze dried food as well.

353

:

And then I have a whole line of

bones and chews and treats and

354

:

biscuits and those kind of things.

355

:

I even have some supplements for dogs to

help them calm down we make some small

356

:

products like heal Sav and a Paw Wax.

357

:

We actually make those.

358

:

It's all made natural ingredients

because there's nothing made

359

:

that's harmful to an animal.

360

:

If I'm gonna sit there and eat a biscuit

in front of somebody , I believe in what

361

:

I'm selling, and I really do believe

in this company and their products,

362

:

it's pretty amazing what they're doing.

363

:

When I first started talking to him

last year, last April, I started

364

:

talking to the development director,

and I was thinking about it, right?

365

:

She told me they had 159 stores.

366

:

They're almost at 170 now, and

that was less than a year ago.

367

:

So they're growing leaps and

bounds, and how long have you

368

:

Dixie: been feeding this food?

369

:

Lisa: Like I said, I just started,

when I found out about pet wants is

370

:

when I started feeding my dogs that

before I was feeding them good foods.

371

:

Okay.

372

:

They're a little bit more expensive

than they require subscriptions.

373

:

Okay.

374

:

I got enough subscriptions going on.

375

:

I really didn't wanna

get into all that stuff.

376

:

You should, wanna give them a quality

product for what they're paying.

377

:

And those subscriptions get

a little bit outta hand.

378

:

, I'm not knocking on those products.

379

:

They really are good foods.

380

:

I read the ingredients on

'em and they are good food.

381

:

But that's getting locked

up in a subscription.

382

:

You don't have to do that, with pet wants.

383

:

You don't have to, and I'm

always getting special Right now.

384

:

I got 5% off on my website till Saturday.

385

:

And at the end of the day.

386

:

That midnight or 5% off

everything on my entire site.

387

:

I'm always putting something on

special because I believe in doing

388

:

it, I'm just trying to like, get it

out there, get the word out there and

389

:

get people to, to try the product.

390

:

Believe me, everybody's tried it.

391

:

I've heard nothing but good stuff.

392

:

Nothing but good stuff.

393

:

Nobody's ever said anything

bad about the product.

394

:

I even check on 'em like a week later.

395

:

Hey man

396

:

how's fido liking?

397

:

Lisa: The salmon, none of

those might like the salmon.

398

:

I got other products I can

sell, like I can sell lamb or

399

:

we have some grain-free foods.

400

:

Now, that doesn't mean that

the other products have grain.

401

:

All that means is that it's

lower on the glycemic index.

402

:

There's different ways of doing the

food without making it dangerous, but

403

:

it costs more because, that's what

the grain free foods cost a little

404

:

bit more, but they're not putting by

products in there to make it, to fill it.

405

:

They're not putting fillers,

so that's what matters.

406

:

That would be the best thing

for an overweight dog too.

407

:

Dixie: Have you talked to your

vet about this particular food

408

:

since you've been using it?

409

:

Or have you gotten any feedback from any

of your customers who use it with their,

410

:

what their vets

411

:

Lisa: have said.

412

:

yeah.

413

:

The customers are loving it.

414

:

My, I told my vet about it and she

loved it, and I didn't see Dr Sagrera

415

:

yet, but I have two vets that go too.

416

:

The other one's Dr.

417

:

Kelly over at Healthy Paws.

418

:

She's a great vet as well.

419

:

And I go over there too.

420

:

I got an appointment with with Dr.

421

:

Kelly was two weeks ago.

422

:

I brought him brought both of em in Kobe.

423

:

I couldn't get his ear

infection cleaned up.

424

:

. Those dogs have like

different ears from us.

425

:

You really could keep their ears clean.

426

:

Unfortunately, he's got a big crop job,

so I have to keep his ears really clean.

427

:

So when I went to go see Dr.

428

:

Kelly, I told her about it

and she was all about it.

429

:

She was all for it.

430

:

I told her, I said, look,

this is what's in the food.

431

:

She's man, this sounds

like really good stuff.

432

:

I said, it is, but she also sells her

own food at, her veterinary shop, and

433

:

I'm not gonna, try and advertise with,

her selling her own product, , and Dr.

434

:

Sagrera does also, she's got

a store in the front, just

435

:

got, a lot of healthy stuff.

436

:

. But I just asked for their approval and

everybody that I've talked to, whether

437

:

it's a customer and I talk them a week

or two later and say, Hey man, how so

438

:

and so liking the product, they love it.

439

:

They love it.

440

:

Every dog has loved it.

441

:

Okay?

442

:

Not every dog loved the salmon because

some dogs , don't like fishy stuff, but

443

:

every dog's loved the product, period.

444

:

So if they don't like the salmon, I

put 'em on the lamb, and guess what?

445

:

They love the lamb.

446

:

So you gotta problem solved, and

that's what you know, you gotta work

447

:

with people and you gotta communicate.

448

:

You gotta talk to 'em to find out

exactly what's going on with the dog.

449

:

If you don't, if you don't put

your heart into it, you know you

450

:

gotta do that because you gotta

find out if it's actually working.

451

:

And that's what I do.

452

:

I've learned so much in the last

couple years about pet nutrition,

453

:

that I just wanna help as much as I

can, and I'm not here for the money.

454

:

It's to help people.

455

:

That's what it's for.

456

:

Believe me, I've only been in business

two months, so I'm not killing it yet, but

457

:

yeah, I'd like to get the point where I'm

actually making some money, but it's okay.

458

:

I'm just loving what I'm doing.

459

:

It makes me feel good and warm inside.

460

:

It's a beautiful feeling.

461

:

Now we're seeing these things and

we're taking the responsibility to

462

:

help stay outta that because they

don't know any better than dogs.

463

:

But we get to teach 'em.

464

:

And that's what, that's why I'm trying

to keep an eye on her and stay on

465

:

top of her because I do not want her

to only live eight and a half years.

466

:

So when I adopted Darby, Darby picked

me at the rescue it was the westbank

467

:

SPCA and she came running out.

468

:

She just jumped in my lap and I just

fell over with her and she picked me and

469

:

I said, oh, this is my dog right here.

470

:

So I brought her home and everything

and that's when we made a little bond.

471

:

But let me tell you something.

472

:

She was only a year and a half

old then, and then she only

473

:

stayed with me seven years.

474

:

And I'm like, oh my God, , she was the

only part of my life for seven years.

475

:

That's so difficult to swallow.

476

:

It's a hard pill to swallow.

477

:

But I know that I gave her a good life

when she was here, and I know I gave

478

:

her tons of love, but I just still

carry that guilt in inside of me.

479

:

. I'm just trying to help people care.

480

:

I care.

481

:

I care.

482

:

I'm gonna help every dog I possibly can.

483

:

Every dog, every cat.

484

:

I keep saying dog, but cats too.

485

:

I love cats too, but

I just don't have 'em.

486

:

'cause they got dogs, and I don't

know how good Kobe would do cats,

487

:

he's a little on the frisky side.

488

:

And they need our love.

489

:

They need our attention, they

need our guidance for sure.

490

:

They're like kids.

491

:

You gotta guide him in

the right direction.

492

:

Dixie: I definitely, like I said,

know where you're coming from.

493

:

'cause I just dealt with that myself

and I almost feel guilty in a way

494

:

that like, I should have noticed

something sooner, even though but you

495

:

Lisa: didn't know.

496

:

Dixie: You didn't know.

497

:

Again and honestly, like I don't think I

really could have caught it any sooner,

498

:

it's just these little telltale things.

499

:

It's just one of those things, right?

500

:

When you think something is off with your

pet, don't hesitate and go get it checked

501

:

out, even if it's something stupid,

502

:

Lisa: right?

503

:

Yeah, and there are vets out

there that are pretty reasonable,

504

:

none of every vet's gonna charge

you normally just for a visit.

505

:

Dr.

506

:

Kelly only charges $65 per visit.

507

:

That's a beautiful thing.

508

:

That's cheap.

509

:

$65 for a visit.

510

:

Come on, man.

511

:

You can't beat that.

512

:

But staying on top of their

health is part of our job too.

513

:

If I can help tell people what to

do, if I can help them, show them,

514

:

teach them, whatever, if I can do

that, there'll be a lot more dogs

515

:

out here for a lot longer time, and

I just the other day I found a dog.

516

:

I almost got hit by a car

right here on River Road.

517

:

So I stopped, I pulled over, as

soon as I opened my door, he jumped

518

:

in my truck like, oh my gosh.

519

:

So I was like, okay, we gotta try

and find this guy's owner, because

520

:

I could tell he wasn't malnourished.

521

:

I could tell somebody had

him wasn't neutered either.

522

:

And I was like, oh man.

523

:

So they probably breed this dog.

524

:

'cause he was a staff, he,

it's like the staff too.

525

:

And he was a blue staffer on top of that.

526

:

I just don't want dogs to end

up getting in trouble and I

527

:

don't want them, I just don't.

528

:

I just don't, there's so

many dogs need to be rescued.

529

:

That's my thing, right?

530

:

So I got on Facebook and went on

all these different sites to try

531

:

and find out who this dog belong to.

532

:

No answer.

533

:

No answer.

534

:

So I went to the vet.

535

:

So Dr.

536

:

Kelly said, can you tell

me if this dog chip?

537

:

Of course he wasn't.

538

:

So on the way back to my house, I

went back through the neighborhood

539

:

and I saw some neighbors

outside and right where he was.

540

:

Where I've actually picked him up

at and one neighbor said, oh, I

541

:

know exactly where that dog lives.

542

:

I know the dog very well.

543

:

So she took me over there and we

went and brought the dog back to

544

:

his house, which is a good thing.

545

:

That dog was lucky.

546

:

He was close to be by an 18

wheeler, not just a truck.

547

:

He didn't seem wheel, and he

wasn't maybe a 15, 20 pound dog.

548

:

He's still a puppy.

549

:

I'm like, my goodness, yeah,

I just felt compelled to do

550

:

something with that to help.

551

:

Yeah, it's just me.

552

:

It's my animal love and heart,

553

:

Dixie: Before we end the call, , what

role do you hope pet wants metairie

554

:

plays in the local pet community?

555

:

. Lisa: I hope we're educators, hope

that we are not just educators, but

556

:

maybe motivators to help people to

understand pet, nutrition, because,

557

:

nobody else is gonna tell you.

558

:

Nobody else is gonna tell you.

559

:

They Walmarts and stuff,

they're selling the food.

560

:

I'm sure they don't know, I don't sell

hide and stuff like that, those things

561

:

can flip the stomach and make 'em sick,

so it's just, I wanna be an educator and

562

:

a motivator and just an assistant, if

you will to help people, to help the dogs

563

:

live healthier, happier, longer lives.

564

:

That's my motto,

565

:

Dixie: Good luck on your new endeavor,

566

:

Lisa: thank you so much.

567

:

I appreciate you having me.

568

:

This is how we gonna spread the way.

569

:

Thank you.

570

:

I appreciate it.

571

DIXIE LOUVIERE

My love for animals has driven me to dedicate the last 20 years to rescue. In 2024, we established a 501c3 nonprofit Unwanted Feline Organization Inc. and are thrilled to be building a cat sanctuary in Washington Parish, Louisiana, where we can offer a haven for cats in need. I thought it would be great for the rescue to have a podcast so Animal Posse was started with the hope of bringing rescues together, getting them more exposure, and finding more animals
homes.
