The Louisiana Cat Cruelty Case : The Red Flags Every Animal Lover Should Know

Published on: 25th September, 2026

In this heartbreaking episode of Animal Posse, host Dixie sits down with Jonathan from Rescue Alliance to discuss a devastating animal cruelty case in Walker, Louisiana. Authorities discovered nearly 40 cats and kittens trapped in dangerous, triple-digit conditions without proper access to food, water, or ventilation. Tragically, many of the animals did not survive.

Jonathan shares what rescuers encountered on the scene, the urgent medical care required for the survivors, and the emotional toll these cases take on animal welfare organizations. The conversation also sheds light on the realities of rescue work, the challenges of overcrowding, the importance of responsible animal care, and how communities can help prevent similar tragedies.

This powerful episode raises awareness about animal neglect, responsible rescue practices, fostering, and the lifesaving impact of volunteers and donations.

Dixie:

Welcome back to Animal Posse.

2

:

Today, we are gonna be discussing

a heartbreaking story out of

3

:

Walker, Louisiana, where a local

rescue became the site of an

4

:

unimaginable animal cruelty tragedy.

5

:

Authorities recently discovered nearly 40

cats and kittens trapped inside without

6

:

food or water in temperatures here in

Louisiana are soaring near 100 degrees.

7

:

Tragically, many of these cats

lost their lives, but thanks to

8

:

swift intervention, many others

were rescued from severe distress.

9

:

So joining us today is Jonathan from

Rescue Alliance, the organization that

10

:

stepped in on the ground to help rescue

and care for their surviving babies.

11

:

Jonathan, thank you so much

for the critical work you

12

:

do and for joining us today.

13

:

It's not really the conversation that

I wanna have, but it's a very important

14

:

conversation so that everybody's aware

of, first off, what rescues do, and

15

:

then also to look for, red flags.

16

:

There was a very heartbreaking story

the other day, and you were involved in

17

:

this, and it was an animal cruelty case.

18

:

I don't even know if you

would call it a hoarding case.

19

:

It was out of Livingston Parish, and

you were one of the rescuers there to

20

:

help out and take some of the kittens.

21

:

Can you walk us through that, like how

you became involved with it and what

22

:

it looked like when you got there?

23

:

Jonathan: We got contacted by the Humane

Society of Louisiana becau- to go out and

24

:

coordinate with the actual animal cruelty

investigator for Livingston Parish.

25

:

When we arrived on the scene at the

person's house we were escorted into

26

:

the garage whereas the garage was

closed, had no air conditioning.

27

:

It had one box fan with a water heater.

28

:

There was one adult cat and 11 kittens

all in a garage that had no airflow

29

:

Dixie: that's insane.

30

:

And the weather that we have here,

it's, we're close to 100 degrees,

31

:

so I can't even imagine how hot

it would've been in that garage.

32

:

Jonathan: At the time when w- when I was

there, it was:

33

:

The actual outside field temperature

with the heat index was 103.

34

:

So on average, when, with a 103

temperature inside of a garage, you're

35

:

looking at about 125 to 130 degrees

inside the garage, which I was in there

36

:

for 20 minutes, and in 20 minutes I

basically, I was, I'd almost sweated all,

37

:

all the little fluids that I had out.

38

:

So you can only imagine that by having

this ca- these cats in the garage with

39

:

no proper airflow, they can't regulate

their temperature the way we can.

40

:

And that's the reason why, even one

of the 12 that we pulled, we ended up

41

:

losing because by the time, within two

hours, its body started shutting down.

42

:

That's so- So we ended up having-

43

:

Dixie: That's so sad.

44

:

Jonathan: Yeah.

45

:

We ended up having to humanely

euthanize, which to tell you about,

46

:

we don't euthanize talk about since

:

47

:

second cat to be euthanized since 2019.

48

:

Dixie: It's something that

you don't- consider lightly.

49

:

You only do it when it's

absolutely necessary.

50

:

That's horrible.

51

:

Jonathan: When we took, when

by the time we got the kitten

52

:

to the vet, his diagnosis with

the baby was already comatose.

53

:

Dixie: Oh my God.

54

:

Jonathan: It faded from, it was alive

and alert when we picked up the cat,

55

:

but its organs were already failing.

56

:

But, s- 'cause we were literally,

we picked up the cats at

57

:

11:40 and by 1:30 it was gone.

58

:

Dixie: That's terrible.

59

:

And how old were the kittens?

60

:

Jonathan: This kitten that

ended up passing away was

61

:

probably about six weeks old.

62

:

The average we had, the one adult

was probably about two years old.

63

:

The majority of the rest of the

cats and kittens was about f-

64

:

between six weeks and four months

that was actually in her garage.

65

:

And, as anybody who knows anything

about cats do not regulate their,

66

:

or especially kittens, they don't

regulate their temperature properly.

67

:

They don't regulate their temperature,

therefore that's why when you've

68

:

got kittens without a mom, we

have to put 'em on heating pads

69

:

So the fact that they were in a garage

without air, it, they were dehydrated.

70

:

The majority of them had ringworm

upper respiratory infections.

71

:

It's just intense.

72

:

Dixie: Yeah.

73

:

I can't even imagine that.

74

:

And were they all in

one cage or were they in

75

:

Jonathan: separate ones?

76

:

They were free-roaming inside the

garage, so that's one thing that we can

77

:

say is yes, they were not in the cages.

78

:

But at the same time, a garage is

not a place for any animal to be kept

79

:

because it doesn't have proper airflow

80

:

Dixie: Wow.

81

:

It's unimaginable.

82

:

I just can't even understand that.

83

:

Like I know for me personally, I

worry always about hurricanes or

84

:

power outages I don't worry about

myself, I'm worried about the cats.

85

:

Which is why we have a,

whole house generator.

86

:

I got that to make sure if we ever

did lose power and we had to stay

87

:

for a storm or something like that,

that the cats wouldn't have to be

88

:

hot because I can go move somewhere

and not be hot, but the cats can't.

89

:

Jonathan: Yeah.

90

:

And the b- the biggest key to

even with the hurricane situation,

91

:

if you lose power, you open

windows, you let air flow through.

92

:

Whereas they were in a garage,

the garage door was closed.

93

:

There's a gas water heater in there,

which is also producing heat, and the

94

:

field temperature outside was 103 degrees.

95

:

So it was all things that, are

dangerous when it comes to cats.

96

:

Whenever you have an animal rescue,

especially a cat rescue, y- you have

97

:

to take into account all the details.

98

:

You ha- you need to educate

before you go and start a rescue.

99

:

Find out what's your pro- what's

the proper protocols, safety

100

:

measures that you can put in place.

101

:

It's all the things that, we

always recommend if you're gonna

102

:

consider even opening a rescue,

go volunteer at a shelter.

103

:

See what their protocols are,

what their, what they do, how

104

:

they handle the s- the situation.

105

:

And the other thing is, if you do

have an animal rescue, you have to

106

:

know what your boundaries and what

your limits are, because overwhelming

107

:

yourself at the same time is just as

bad Because you can't properly care

108

:

for the ones that are in your custody.

109

:

And as an animal rescue, we take

the responsibility of all the

110

:

cats and kittens in our care.

111

:

Dixie: Yeah.

112

:

Jonathan: Ab- absolutely.

113

:

When rescues have to actually take

dogs you're responsible for those dogs.

114

:

That is a life that is dependent upon

you, because cats dying in your care is

115

:

not something that should be happening.

116

:

It happens on certain, on rare situations.

117

:

But when you're locking, 40 cats in one

building and 17 of them are deceased, and

118

:

then they go into the person's house and

there's 12 cats and kittens in the garage,

119

:

in both places it was over a hun- it was

triple-digit weather inside the buildings.

120

:

We have to, we have to hold to the

standards that is healthy for them.

121

:

Dixie: Yeah.

122

:

And I think that's something,, that the

public doesn't realize, too, when they're

123

:

approaching a rescue to ask for help.

124

:

They think that a rescue can just take in

whatever they have, and it's not the case.

125

:

'Cause like you said, you get to that

point where you know you're, , at

126

:

a limit and you have to say, "Okay,

we cannot take any more in right

127

:

now 'cause we don't have room."

128

:

And it's not that we don't wanna take them

in and don't wanna help them, it's just,

129

:

you have limited resources to work with.

130

:

Jonathan: It's limited resources.

131

:

Per so many cats and kittens, you

have to have one volunteer for each.

132

:

And our ratio with everything that we do

is six cats and kittens per volunteer.

133

:

That's the ratio that we try to

average out because at our rescue

134

:

we believe that it's not just

cleaning, it's not just feeding.

135

:

You have to have time to love on them

and show these cats and kittens love

136

:

because, that's a part of being rescued.

137

:

We're getting them ready to

go to their forever homes.

138

:

So if w- if you're overwhelming

yourself, that's less time that you

139

:

can individually work with the rescue.

140

:

Dixie: You said you got

these cats out of the garage.

141

:

Were there two locations

that these cats were kept?

142

:

Jonathan: Yes.

143

:

She actually had a storefront

location which is where the 40 was.

144

:

When they made entry into that

storefront location, there was a

145

:

total of 40 cats and kittens there.

146

:

There were 17 dead.

147

:

At that point, they went to her

house, and that's where they

148

:

found the 12 in the garage.

149

:

I

150

:

, Dixie: It's just so hard

to wrap your head around.

151

:

, Not only that you're doing something like

this, but that you have two locations and

152

:

it happened in two separate locations.

153

:

It's just unimaginable.

154

:

I'm at a loss for words.

155

:

It's just horrible.

156

:

Jonathan: It is.

157

:

In, in rescue we have, we do not let

our rescue facility go above 78 degrees.

158

:

And, that's for someone's house, I,

my house stays at about 67 degrees.

159

:

But, as, as far as the rescue, we try

to keep them at a nice comfortable 78

160

:

degrees just because we don't want them

too cold because we have metal cages.

161

:

We have the stainless steel

cages which tend to get colder

162

:

the lower the temperature goes.

163

:

So we regulate everything based

upon temperature, humidity.

164

:

There's a whole lot involved

in doing rescue besides just,

165

:

putting cats up for adoption.

166

:

Since this whole, since we did remove

these cats and kittens, they've

167

:

been having to receive IV fluids.

168

:

They've been, having to get Nutri-Cal,

which is a high-calorie supplement.

169

:

There's a lot that we have to

do just because their bodies

170

:

are battered because of heat

171

:

Dixie: Yeah, that's what I was

gonna actually ask you too.

172

:

How did that work as far as you

taking the ones that you took and

173

:

you have to go get them all to

the vet to basically be triaged?

174

:

Obviously they would need fluids.

175

:

But just the exams in general to see

what was going on with them, to see,

176

:

how long they've been without food,

how long they've been without water.

177

:

So what was that like?

178

:

Jonathan: It was expensive because,

we're, we, when we actually had to

179

:

go and we had to order antibiotics.

180

:

We had to-- They needed intra-fungal

because majority of them have ringworms.

181

:

We had, we've had to bathe them

and just in two days they've had to

182

:

be, they've received multiple baths

because they were soiled in urine.

183

:

And taking them all to the vet,

of course the exam alone, you're

184

:

we're looking at almost $50 per cat.

185

:

But on top of that, you've got the

Lactated Ringers to rehydrate them.

186

:

But, on average, you're looking to spend

anywhere between $400 and $1,000 per cat

187

:

Dixie: Are they still at the vet right

now or are they at your facility?

188

:

Jonathan: No, they're actually

at our rescue center right now.

189

:

We actually, we did have a, we had a

very good crew of volunteers come today.

190

:

They all received IV fluids.

191

:

They all got another bath.

192

:

They're eating like they

haven't eaten in 10 years.

193

:

But they're receiving the best

treatment and care possible

194

:

Dixie: And how is their temperament?

195

:

Jonathan: Oh, they're lovable.

196

:

They want love.

197

:

They're, they're playful.

198

:

They're a lot more playful now

than they were two days ago.

199

:

They're eating more than a normal

cat would, but at the same time, we

200

:

did not know when the last time they

actually had a good quality meal

201

:

even the reports of with the cats

that were picked up from the strip

202

:

mall location, which was the 40,

they had food and water there, but

203

:

the cats did not have access to it.

204

:

So we don't know when their last meal was

205

:

Dixie: That's just so crazy to me.

206

:

Like I said, I just I'm

at a loss for words.

207

:

I really am.

208

:

The fact that they would be there

and there was food and water

209

:

there, but they had no access

to it, and then in that heat.

210

:

Jonathan: And that's what

makes it very dangerous.

211

:

At Rescue Alliance, our cats, their

cages are cleaned every morning.

212

:

They get fresh food and water, and

multiple times throughout the day,

213

:

we go through and we check to make

sure that they didn't eat all their

214

:

food, they didn't drink all their

water, they didn't spill their water.

215

:

This happens between two and five

times a day just to make sure that

216

:

they have all the nutrients they need

217

:

So having an animal rescue for one,

people think that, oh, an animal

218

:

rescuer collecting all this money.

219

:

A true reputable animal rescue does

not really make that much money

220

:

because we're s- we're busy spending

all of it on the cats in our care.

221

:

We buy food, we buy blankets, we

buy snacks we- or treats for them.

222

:

Everything that we do goes towards

bettering them to find their forever home

223

:

So , anybody who wants to start an animal

rescue they, the first thing that they,

224

:

that we want them to know is don't go

into it thinking you're gonna make money.

225

:

Dixie: Yeah, and that's like

something that gets me right there.

226

:

The whole mindset behind how

this happened, was it because

227

:

of like , a money motivation?

228

:

Was there this idea that you could

be making money or was it just it

229

:

started out as good and then they just

didn't know what to do essentially?

230

:

It's just, insane.

231

:

Jonathan: Unfortunately, that's one of

the things that we won't know for now.

232

:

It's still too early on

in the investigation.

233

:

But, for the biggest part I would say

that she probably got overwhelmed.

234

:

Which, which in animal rescue,

becoming overwhelmed and not having

235

:

the proper assistance, it can,

you can get overwhelmed very fast.

236

:

Saying no is one of the hardest things,

but even at Rescue Alliance, like for

237

:

instance, right now we have over 50

animal surrender pending applications.

238

:

But I cannot say, "Oh we'll go ahead

and we'll take them," because then we

239

:

become just as bad as the other person.

240

:

And we want to give the cats in

our care the best care, the best

241

:

attention, the most love possible,

because what we do will determine

242

:

the outcome of their adoption

243

:

Dixie: Yeah and back to what you were

saying too, like when you have to say no.

244

:

This is a very heartbreaking thing

for me because I saw a photo the

245

:

other day of the before of one of

the kittens and then the after.

246

:

And it was a post I

was actually tagged in.

247

:

Somebody was asking me if

I could take the kitten.

248

:

I was not in the position to

take the kitten 'cause I was

249

:

getting ready to go out of town.

250

:

And for that reason, I had to say no.

251

:

And I remember seeing it was a little

five-week-old black and white kitten.

252

:

I'm not 100% sure if it's the

same one, but the person who is

253

:

accused of doing all this is the

one that ended up with the kitten.

254

:

And I believe it is now one of

the kittens that was in one of the

255

:

primary photos that you can see

online on social media right now.

256

:

And it's absolutely heartbreaking.

257

:

It is absolutely heartbreaking to

know that I was tagged in that post

258

:

and I couldn't take that kitten.

259

:

You know-

260

:

Jonathan: It makes us, as far as the

reputable animal rescues, it makes

261

:

us feel bad because some of these

cats came from shelters that reached

262

:

out to us to help them because they

were overcrowded or they needed help.

263

:

And now that this happened, it makes

us feel bad because it's maybe we

264

:

should've just went and take it.

265

:

It starts making us question

why we didn't take them.

266

:

Dixie: Absolutely.

267

:

Jonathan: But at the same time, we don't

wanna take something that we can't handle.

268

:

And our rescue on average h- houses

between 60 and 100 cats, depending on the

269

:

amount of fosters we have at the time.

270

:

So we operate, a big network.

271

:

We we've done about 150 adoptions

alone just since July 1st.

272

:

So we get cats in, we get them homes,

but for every five cats that get adopted,

273

:

we probably get calls for over 40

274

:

And we do, we get cussed out, we

get talked we have people go off

275

:

on us y'all are a cat rescue,

you should just take them."

276

:

But we can't.

277

:

We can't take every single one

278

:

As much as we want to, we can't

279

:

Dixie: Yeah, and it's goes back to another

thing too, like when people are on social

280

:

media asking people to take cats, I know

a lot of the times there's times where

281

:

people will just wanna give it to the

first person that says, "I'll take it,"

282

:

you don't know anything about that person.

283

:

At least go do your

research, do your homework.

284

:

And it goes the same too if

somebody says that they're a rescue.

285

:

Just ask them do you have any references?

286

:

Can I call your vet?

287

:

Do you have any photos?"

288

:

Or just at least something to prove

that the cat is gonna be going to a

289

:

place that's gonna be acceptable and

where they're gonna be treated well.

290

:

Jonathan: And one of the other things that

I'll say also is a lot of times they s-

291

:

they, if the person, if the finder of the

cat can even do a little bit of legwork,

292

:

let's say you find a mom and a litter or

just you find a kitten, call in- instead

293

:

of just trying to first surrender, see

if, "Hey if I was to foster this cat,

294

:

can y'all help me find a home for it?"

295

:

Or, "If I take the cat to go get

vetted, will that help get the cat

296

:

into y'all's program a lot faster?"

297

:

Because the answer is yes.

298

:

We-- There, there's an amazing

resource, Dog People of Livingston.

299

:

They're amazing.

300

:

It's a low-cost spay/neuter.

301

:

It's $60, you get them fixed,

vaccinated, and microchipped.

302

:

Resources like that are available,

and a lot of times when the finder ta-

303

:

can do the legwork and say, take them

to the appointment, get them fixed

:

and and say, "Hey, I got it done.

305

:

Here's the paperwork."

306

:

We're able to work it into our program

because then we don't have to try

307

:

to say, "Okay we got to go in and

get some appointments scheduled.

308

:

We got to get them…"

309

:

We're able to focus on finding

other ones homes, which allows us

310

:

to make room to take that baby in

311

:

Dixie: Yes I'm big on fostering in place.

312

:

That's what I always try to tell

people, when they call me up.

313

:

If you can foster in place, it's gonna

work out a lot better for everybody.

314

:

Jonathan: And utilize the resources

of low-cost spay/neutering.

315

:

Work with the rescues and, a, a lot of

times, or more so if you're fostering

316

:

them in place and you're able to help, get

one, maybe two, or the whole litter, then

317

:

from there, once they're ready to go, you

can even be a part of seeing them find

318

:

their forever home at an adoption event

319

:

'Cause you could bring your vol- your

fosters to an adoption event and volunteer

320

:

at the adoption event with that animal

rescue, and you get to see the loving

321

:

home that baby who you've cared for gets

to go and gets all the love in the world.

322

:

Volunteering to help animal rescues,

animal shelters, it's what makes the life

323

:

of cats, dogs, ferrets, whatever you're

looking at, wh- whatever kind of rescue

324

:

it is, it makes them healthier and happier

because they got the love they needed

325

:

Dixie: I know you said that the Humane

Society of Louisiana was involved.

326

:

Do you know who the other

rescues are that were assisting

327

:

with the cats that were found?

328

:

Jonathan: I do know that the

Denham Springs Animal Shelter is

329

:

playing a big intricate role in it.

330

:

One of the kittens that w- that we did

take actually happened to come from Onyx

331

:

Animal Rescue, and they put it back in…

332

:

they took the one baby back

into their foster program.

333

:

And there's just a bunch

of other volunteers who are

334

:

stepping up to really help

335

:

Dixie: Before we end the call,

do you have any final message?

336

:

And can you tell people

how they can donate to you?

337

:

'Cause like you said, you had to provide

all this intensive care to these kittens,

338

:

and that's just the beginning of it.

339

:

So how can people donate to you?

340

:

Jonathan: They can go to our

website, animalrecovery.org,

341

:

and click the Donate tab.

342

:

That has our Chewy list, our

Amazon list, and all the ways

343

:

that they monetarily can donate.

344

:

They can also mail stuff or drop it

off to our rescue center, which is at

345

:

12478 Highway 44 in Gonzales, Louisiana.

346

:

And as far as one last thing I wanna say

is if we all can work together, whether

347

:

you're finding a cat or a dog or any

of those, the more we work together,

348

:

the more lives we can save together

349

:

Dixie: That's a great closing

message, and I agree with that 100%.

350

:

Thank you so much for coming on.

351

:

I know it was a difficult thing

to talk about, but it's something

352

:

that we definitely need to get

out there to raise awareness.

353

:

Jonathan: I do agree.

354

:

And, If we can all come together,

we can make an impact on the

355

:

pet overpopulation in Louisiana.

356

:

Dixie: Absolutely.

357

:

Thank you for joining me today, Jonathan.

358

:

Jonathan: Thank you for having me.

DIXIE LOUVIERE

My love for animals has driven me to dedicate the last 20 years to rescue. In 2024, we established a 501c3 nonprofit Unwanted Feline Organization Inc. and are thrilled to be building a cat sanctuary in Washington Parish, Louisiana, where we can offer a haven for cats in need. I thought it would be great for the rescue to have a podcast so Animal Posse was started with the hope of bringing rescues together, getting them more exposure, and finding more animals
homes.
